Kesungguhan pengurus pasukan besbol "Oakland Athletics" membantu pasukannya menjadi inspirasi Brad Pitt membikin "Moneyball". Pitt mengetengahkan visi Billy Beane yang sukar diterima ahli pasukannya. Menggemari sukan besbol, Pitt memahami masalah utama yang dihadapi pemain pasukan yang dibayar gaji rendah.
"There were these themes underneath it. These guys that are stuck in an unfair game, there's rich teams that have 5,6,7 times their payroll and then there's them and how are they gonna compete? How are they gonna find an equal playing field? Because these guys are buying all the top players. – Brad Pitt.
Menggunakan kaedah unik untuk menilai persembahan pemain, usaha Beane bagaimanapun dilihat sebagai sukar dicapai.
“There were actually inefficiencies in the way we value players and so then it becomes a theme of value and how we value people and value ourselves and then they deploy this system by necessity again and take, you know they're labeled heretics and fools and run up against great opposition but in that time these underdogs they're able to push something together that's formidable and to change the game in the end." – Brad Pitt.
